Pannier Champagne

Located in the Marne Valley, Champagne Pannier benefits from high-quality supplies coming from the best Champagne vineyards, from Côte des Blancs to Montagne de Reims and Vallée de la Marne. These terroirs produce Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and, of course, Pinot Meunier, a grape variety for which the House has developed an exceptional mastery, providing its wines with an incomparably generous and fruity character.

In a sector surrounded by old players, established for many centuries, Churchill’s in its 37 years of existence has distinguished itself by its exclusive wines with their unique identity.
Being only a youngster in a sector of ancient competitors, “gives us the right” to confront this business with some irreverence and bolder claims. As for the wines, the more elegant, and less sweet wines are our style.

Saint Clair is a family run company owned by Neal and Judy Ibbotson who are joined by their son, Tony and two daughters Sarina and Julie. Neal and Judy have been pioneers of the grape in the Marlborough region since 1978, initially selling grapes to local wine companies, emerging to make their own first vintage in 1994. This young dynamic company is making top class estate wines through its outstanding winemaker Matt Thomson.

Red Cliffs near Mildura in North West Victoria is home to Deakin Estate. Here the combination of the warm, sunny climate and the life-giving Murray River allows the team to produce fruit of the highest quality and wines brimming with flavour and varietal character. The estate is named after a former Prime Minister of Australia, Alfred Deakin, who encouraged the irrigation of the land in the Murray River Valley laying the foundation of what has now become one of Australia’s most productive and prosperous sources of high quality produce including citrus, olives, almonds and grapes. The Artisan’s Blend wines offer superb value for money as house wines, while the rich and meaty Deakin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the star of the varietal range.

Without the influence of Penfolds, the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer. Penfolds’ has not only a reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential but is also renowned for the innovative spirit that has led them since their foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times. One of the world’s true wine icons; Grange is a wine that must be tried at least once in a lifetime.

Contemporary wines for immediate drinking – the Rawson’s Retreat range of wines has been crafted with immediate drinkability in mind. This fine collection of straight varietals and blends was made from grapes grown on select vineyards across southeast Australia. Each wine in the range brings something different to the collection. The Chardonnay offers a choice of fine Australian interpretations of classic old-world varieties – it displays the benefits of multi-regional and multi-vineyard sourcing and is incredibly consistent in its quality year to year. The Shiraz/ Cabernet blend is uniquely Australian, taking the sum of the parts and turning them into a greater whole. Marrying the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the generousity of Shiraz has delivered a wine that has earned a legion of fans around the world. The Rawson’s Retreat wines are ideal as an aperitif on their own or with a range of different cuisines and food types.

Katnook Estate lies at the heart of Coonawarra, premier district for Australian red wines. ‘Katnook’ is an Aboriginal word meaning “fat land” referring to Coonawarra’s red, fertile soil. The Katnook Founder’s Block wines are named after the original land holding of John Riddoch, founder of Coonawarra. Wayne Stehbens, Senior Winemaker at the estate, has been at the helm of the winery since 1979 and boasts an extraordinary track record of trophies and awards. His wines represent remarkable value for those looking for a wine with the stamp of Coonawarra. His goal: “making wines which show subtlety, intrigue and complexity. Reflecting the essence of Coonawarra’s terroir is integral to my winemaking approach.”

Our on-trade Australian house wine traces its name back to the 1840’s when James Keenan emigrated from Ireland to start a new life in Australia. Today the area in which he settled in South Australia is still known as Keenan’s Bridge. The wines are excellent value for money, a good food match but with an approachable style that makes them perfect for selling as wine by the glass.

Located in Stellenbosch, the farm of Welmoed was first granted to Governor Simon van der Stel in 1690. Over the years, many great wines have been produced in the Welmoed cellar.Today, Welmoed maintains its proud winemaking tradition. The brand has built up a solid reputation both in South Africa and selected overseas markets. The Welmoed range is led by varietal specifics, and placing quality ahead of price, these approachable wines combine a proud sense of history with Welmoed’s distinctive carefully crafted approach.

If family and hospitality could be put into a bottle then Danie de Wet, his wife, Lesca, and sons Peter and Johann would surely win that prize! The De Wetshof Estate is located in the Robertson Wine Valley, 160km from Cape Town. It is South Africa’s premier Chardonnay house, creating a wide range of wine styles from this versatile varietal. Danie de Wet is one of South Africa’s most influential and pioneering winemakers. De Wetshof are a close-knit team, headed up by Danie and his wife Lesca , with a simple credo: ‘to produce truly great Chardonnay’. Over thirty years of experimenting with different clones on different soils are paying fantastic dividends. De Wetshof are past winners of the Grand Prix d’Honneur at VinExpo in Bordeaux.

Wolf Blass is one of Australia’s greatest success stories. From a humble tin shed in the legendary Barossa Valley in 1966, Wolf Blass has grown to become one of Australia’s most successful and awarded winemakers and Wolf Blass wines are exported to more than 50 countries. The brand is recognised internationally as an icon of modern winemaking. Today, the image of the Eaglehawk is synonymous with Wolf Blass wines around the world. Named for Wolf Blass’ first parcel of land in the Barossa, Bilyara is the aboriginal word for Eaglehawk. The Wolf Blass range not only offers wines that are smooth, with excellent character and of superb value but also a fantastic selection of premium and super premium wines. The Black Label is the iconic Wolf Blass blend; it has won the prestigious Jimmy Watson trophy an unprecedented four times since the first vintage in 1973, and more than 230 gold medals.

“They said we were mad” – It’s hard to separate New Zealand and Sauvignon Blanc these days, but Matua were the first to put them together, planting the first Sauvignon Blanc in 1969 and producing their first bottle in 1974. Matua began with a vision shared by Bill and Ross Spence – to revolutionise the New Zealand wine industry by making wines with the best fruit from the best vineyards. Starting as a small, family-run winery in West Auckland, winemakers Ross and Bill Spence quickly gained a reputation for innovative, award-winning New Zealand wines. Today, Matua produces a wide range of distinctive and award winning wines, which are now enjoyed all over the world. Their philosophy still stands and has earned Matua international recognition for its pioneering work.

Kanonkop Estate is often referred to as South Africa’s closest equivalent to a French Premier Cru. The winery, located just outside Stellenbosch, is truly beautiful and a visit is recommended, as is a visit to the Art Gallery. The absolute commitment to quality and the production of the best quality wines is unrelenting. Investment in their cellar, smaller oak barrels, and a new tasting room / reception for visitors to the Estate are just the most recent projects.

Founded in 1892, Bodegas La Rosa has a long history of wine making in Argentina. Today the winery produces modern wines that have vibrant fruit expression and excellent balance. The Andean Vineyards wines and CXV come from high altitude vineyards in Mendoza where the vines benefit from warmth and excllent light during the daytime, and cool nights that maintain freshness and aromatic qualities. The Andean Vineyards Malbec sees no oak and has an attractive note of violet on the nose and lovely ripe fruit on the palate. Its big brother, the Reserve, is a selection of fruit that sees some time in oak. It is rich and mouthfilling with intense fruit flavours. Both wines have a freshness on the finish that gives them great drinkability. The CXV is a polished and sophisticated Cabernet/Syrah/Malbec blend, with perfumes of cedarwood. It is capable of ageing for a number of years. Finally the Aires Andinos wines offer superb value for money, proving that Chile is not the only country that can produce great value, well-made pouring wines.

Torres was the first foreign company to establish holdings in Chile in 1979 and their foresight has meant that they have been able to keep apace with the growing demand for quality Chilean wine. The large temperature differences between day and night, the phylloxera-free soils and the usual Torres attention to detail, produce wines of superb quality. Miguel Torres Chile carry out environmentally friendly viticulture whenever possible using biological alternatives and avoiding the use of aggressive products.

Cono Sur Vineyards & Winery was founded in 1993, with the vision of producing premium, expressive and innovative wines that convey the spirit of the New World. Right from the start, Cono Sur applied new ideas and technology to traditional winemaking methods. Their main goal, therefore, is to create expressive and innovative wines from the world’s southern Most land. Cono Sur’s award-winning winemaker Adolfo Hurtado was described as “one of Chile’s, if not one of the world’s most competitive, diverse and rewarding producers”. Ocio 2013 recently received Excellent Praise in Wine Advocate and was awarded 95 Points, while Silencio was awarded 95 points at Wine & Spirit Magazine.

Lyrarakis winery is situated in the heart of Heraklion on the beautiful island of Crete. In 2016 they celebrated their 50th anniversary. The winery balances innovation & tradition and has been at the forefront of bringing obscure local varieties back to life. High altitude viticulture (400-550m) brings the signature vibrancy and freshness in these wines.

Marimar Torres has been directing the activities at her estate in the Russian River/Green Valley of Sonoma County since 1986. Only 16 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean and 80 kilometres north of San Francisco the site is influenced by the sea’s cooling breezes and drifting fog. That is why Marimar Torres selected this privileged location to “export” the Torres family legacy of fine wines to California. The cool climate she selected is ideal for producing exquisite Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

In the mid to late 19th century, the wines of the Mosel and Rheingau commanded some of the highest prices in the world, along with the great wines of Bordeaux. Tasting the wines of Enno Lippold gives an insight into why. Across the range, from Kabinett to Auslese, these are stunning blends of tropical fruit, sweetness, acidity and intense minerality which reflect the terroir of this remarkable part of the Mosel. The wines are only released when Enno believes they are ready to drink.

For over 200 years the Kuhn family have been at the forefront of viticulture & winemaking in Germany. The current generation of the family is led by Peter Jakob, his wife Angela and their son; Peter Bernhard. With a keen feeling of responsibility in continuing this long tradition in 2004 they moved their entire production to biodynamics. Their goal is to produce “soulful wine in the greatest possible harmony with nature.” This is achieved with aplomb – the wines are a delight and could be used as a definition for the words “minerality” and “freshness”.

Bodegas Inurrieta is located in the Ribera Alta district of Northern Spain. The name Inurrieta refers to the lands where the Arriola family’s ancestors grew vines almost a century ago. The new generations chose the name as a tribute to their loved ones who had such a passion for wine.

Paniza is a quality orientated co-operative which was founded in 1953 in Zaragoza. Ripe and fruit forward, they craft perfect pouring wines and represent great value.

Gaznata craft altitude Garnacha wines from central Spain. They show a wonderfully elegant expression of Garnacha with both fruit and freshness from the warm days and cool nights. The historic Juan del Aguila was a Spanish general who fought in the Battle of Kinsale against the English.

Mia is the passion and dream of a young Barcelona winemaker called Gloria Collell. A dream fueled by her family’s long history of wine-making, her own expertise, plus the help and support of Pedro Ferrer and his world-renowned Freixenet company. Jean Léon travelled the world searching for the perfect place to grow his vines, until he reached Catalonia. There he found the place he was seeking. The Jean Léon Pago lies right at the heart of the Penedès region and was purchased in 1963 by grouping together several carefully selected pieces of land. The property consists in total of 150 hectares, the vineyards are situated on a slightly sloping, south-facing mountainside in the Penedès district, at a height of 280-310m above sea level, sheltered from the northern winds and possible frosts in winter and spring.

One of the family names most synonymous with quality wine in the world. At all levels, Torres produce consistently excellent wines and are mavericks when it comes to investment in education, wine science, and how climate change will influence the wine horizon. Year after year Torres is viewed as the world’s most admired wine brand and with just cause; from their iconic Mas La Plana wine, which shone a spotlight on Spain internationally through to their estates in other parts of Spain, such as Celeste, Torres possess the golden touch and craft delicious wines.

Protected by the cold winds of the Rioja Alavesa, in the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria, and with the exceptional setting of the medieval village of Laguardia, the Solar Viejo wineries have been making wines with singular personality for more than 75 years with Rioja Designation of Origin. The original winery was founded in one of the emblematic manors of Laguardia, within the walled enclosure of the villa. It was there that the first Solar Viejo was developed, the icon of the winery. The current facilities, built over 30 years ago, are in the vicinity of the town and preserve the essence of that original experience. Vineyards that incorporate the expressiveness of a demanding land with excellent wine, a traditional production method and the incorporation of new technologies are the three pillars on which Solar Viejo is established, a benchmark for the oldest D.O. in Spain.

Vina Almirante is one of the most important wineries in North West Spain. Its properties are in the borough of Portas in the Caldas de Reis region situated in the northern part of Salnes Valley. These legendary vineyards, which extend over the 35 Hectares, are treated with tender loving care and in keeping with state-of-the-art wine growing techniques. The wines, under the name Pionero, are distinguished by the faithful reflection of a late autumn harvest, giving rise to a macerated wine endowed with brilliant notes of freshness, elegance and an intense flavour that’s sure to please even the most demanding of palates.

Pazo das Bruxas is a vibrant, refreshing Albarino from North Western Spain. The name of the winery references Galician folklore and is the house of the witches.

“Corte delle calli” is a term that denotes a Venetian little square, the so-called corte, which can be found at the end of some alleys, in Venice called calli. In ancient times the Venetian noble families used to live in big, great palaces facing one of these courts. As well as these courts represent the best of a city like Venice, so the label “Corte delle calli” embodies the best of the Treviso wine production. This line in bottle, is varied and complete, ideal for those who want a practical, concrete and convenient line of products.

Located 20 miles from the centre of Rome on one of the hills that surround the Eternal City, Fontana Candida were the first to export and remain the largest producer of premium quality Frascati wines. Regular and substantial financial investment has resulted in wines that surpass the region’s typical quality and display fruitiness and freshness in an approachable and modern style.

Founded at the beginning of the 1950s, Ca’ Bianca is a particularly prestigious cellar, with deep roots in the Piedmont countryside: the sloping hillsides of Alto Monferrato, between Nizza and Acqui Terme, traditional country for Barbera, Dolcetto, Moscato and Cortese. The company is in Alice Bel Colle, at the top of a high plateau dominating the surrounding scenery which includes the farmlands of Spagna, Polsino and Ca’ Vasari, famous for their quality grapes.

From the Veneto region of North East Italy, the heartland of the world’s Pinot Grigio production, this is a bright and vibrant crisp Pinot Grigio with succulent apple, pear and subtle tropical fruit aromas.

This family venture was established in 1999 by Fausto Albanese and his partner Adriana Galasso when they started to cultivate the Montepulciano vines planted in 1972 by Adriana’s father, Rocco. They immediately converted the vineyard to organic viticulture and in 2004 they bought a further 8 hectares where they continued to plant Montepulciano, but also the native white varieties Pecorino and Trebbiano. The quality of their wines spread quickly by word of mouth throughout Italy, and in recent years they have received glowing reviews and awards from all the major Italian wine publications, including “Tre Bicchieri” for their ‘Cocciapazza’ Montepulciano d’Abruzzo two years running in Gambero Rosso’s annual Vini d’Italia guide.

Carminucci is located in the Marche region of Italy, East of Tuscany on the Adriatic coast. Giovanni Carminucci set up the winery in 1928 and now his son Piero continues the tradition. Crisp, dry whites and rounded reds made using modern outlooks on traditional techniques.

Since Tenuta dell’Ornellaia’s foundation in 1981, this stunning winery has seen the birth of great labels such as Masseto, Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove and Le Volte. Ornellaia is the flagship wine of the estate and has received multiple accolades from Wine Spectator & The Wine Advocate throughout its history. Axel Heinz is the charasmatic winemaker – truly skilled in the production of Bordeaux-facing Italian greats.

The Tenuta San Guido Estate is home to the highly sought after Sassicaia. It was the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rochetta, father of Niccolo the present owner of the Estate, who was the pioneer that introduced non-native vines into the Italian wine scene. In 1968 Sassicaia – a wine which has Cabernet Sauvignon as its primary component and uses French oak barrique ageing methods – was first released and the rest, as they say, is history. The “Super Tuscan” was born and the fame and reputation of Sassicaia has only continued to grow. Sassicaia is in very short supply and sold on allocation only. Please ask your local sales representative for details. Guidalberto is a true second wine and gives earlier drinking pleasure than the first wines.

For over six centuries the Serego Alighieri estate has been the historic reference point for Verona’s winemaking and agricultural traditions. It was in 1353 that Pietro, son of the poet Dante Alighieri, purchased land and a villa in the hills of Valpolicella, and the estate is still the property of the descendants of the author of the Divine Comedy.

The noble Conti Bossi Fedrigotti family has lived in Trentino for almost 600 years, and for more than 300 of them family members have cultivated vines with love and dedication. Their first vintage was in 1697. The biggest innovation came in 1961 with the creation of Fojaneghe, the first Bordeaux blend wine in Italy. The current proprietors, Isabella, Maria Josè and Gian Paolo Bossi Fedrigotti, continue to produce wine on their ancient estates with the same passion as always.

Showing the best of the Languedoc & Rousillon’s generosity these are deliciously supple and rounded. Wines that are both juicy and structured that can be enjoyed both by themselves and with food. The Sauvignon Blanc is Sancerre-like and the Merlot, plummy with a dry finish.

The ancestors of Jean Baptiste de Clock have been making wines since the late 17th century. At first in Bordeaux but since 1864 at the Chateau Font-Mars in Mèze on the Mediterranean coast south-west of Montpellier. Here he produces a delicious wine from the local Picpoul grape. With flavours of tropical fruits and a herbal tinge, the wine has plenty of weight, a rounded texture and a marked freshness that makes it the perfect match for shellfish and seafood.

Bijou is a crisp, dry, Provencal-style Rosé from the little known village of Cabrieres in the South of France. Cabrieres sits at 480m above sea level on a dormant volcano. Sophie Valrose was a viticultural expert in the area and this wine is a homage to her.

Chateau Condamine Bertrand is in the heart of the Languedoc region of the South of France. For over 200 years the Chateau has been in the Jany family. Bruno Andreu, the winemaker & owner, has been continuing this tradition since 1981 making wines of precision and generosity. Coquelicot are blends of Syrah & Merlot and Roussanne & Sauvignon Blanc respectively.

Founded in 1887 in the Lot district, the Georges Vigouroux company has contributed much to the promotion of the wines of South West France. A Pioneer of the Cahors appellation the company, with its award-winning estates and brands of renown, has acquired a great deal of experience with the Malbec grape, originally from the Lot area. The Gouleyant and Pigmentum Malbecs are both expressive and approachable wines with excellent varietal Malbec character. The two chateaux wines are more intense and structured with Chateau Leret-Monpezat, in particular, offering the potential to develop further in bottle.

Duc de Castellac is an easy-drinking wine for sharing, a modern range of very lightly oaked fruit-driven wines. The château on the label is the Maison de Peyrarède, a Bergerac mansion which belonged to a rich business family. Louis XIII once spent a night there. Widely appreciated through Europe, the wines of Bergerac go hand in hand with the humanism of Montaigne and his fellow essayist La Boétie. Later they were to inspire Cyrano with his verve and gallantry.

The House of Chapoutier has a long and proud family tradition dating back to 1808. Today, seven generations later, Michel Chapoutier, carries on this tradition using biodynamic winemaking techniques. Michel Chapoutier’s often daring combination of old and new techniques and his creative solutions to old problems has transformed winemaking in the region, which has received wide international acclaim, including much praise from the respected Mr. Robert Parker. He has the biggest holding in Hermitage and is the largest biodynamic producer in France. The terroir is a living organism and must be reflected through flavours unique to each parcel and vintage rather than strive for a common style. Chapoutier is recognised by their use of Braille on the labels. Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne, owner of the first plot of the Hermitage la Sizeranne – is also the inventor of the first version of abbreviated Braille.

The Roger family have a history in the village of Bue dating back to the early 17th Century. Jean-Max Roger took over the running of the family estate in 1970 and in 2004 was joined by his two sons Etienne and Thibault to continue the long family tradition. It is a single Domaine and the wines are made exclusively from fruit from their own vineyards.

Jean-Claude Chatelain’s family has farmed the hills of Pouilly-Fumé since 1630. The vineyards surrounding the small town of Saint Andelin include some of the most famous in the appellation, and Chatelain’s reputation as a perfectionist is the “stuff of legend” among the local farmers.

Roger Champault has slowly grown his estate from just two hectares when he took it over to its current size of twenty hectares. Now assisted by the next generation, his two sons Laurent and Claude, they produce wines that reflect the terroir of Sancerre, yet remain modern with great purity of fruit. We currently bring in just their entry-level wine, Les Pierris, which they were very proud to see used at the wedding of the Princess of Sweden back in 2010. The wine has aromas of white peach and citrus fruits with a lively freshness and minerality on the palate.

Domaine Sinson is run by two brothers, Hubert & Olivier. Crisp, approachable Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire valley. A perennial consumer favourite.

Cassemichère has a proud tradition dating back to the 1700s. The care and attention paid to the vineyards and in the winemaking are regularly recognised through prizes and high quality ratings. They remain wines ideally suited to seafood and Asian cuisine.

Vincent’s wines portray beautifully what the Muscadet region can achieve – wines of vitality, intensity and complexity. These are wines that are defined by their wonderful acid structure and freshness. We are also lucky to represent his project with Christelle Guibert, Vine Revival, where ancient Melon de Bourgogne vines are brought back to life through gentle pruning, low yields and meticulous care. Sadly Vincent’s vines have been decimated by frost over the last couple of vintages and as such are in very limited quantity.

La Cave des Vignerons de Pfaffenheim are a traditional Alsace house just south of Colmar and to the east of the Vosges. Beautiful single grape variety wines that make fantastic food pairings.

Located in the heart of the Chablis region, J Moreau & Fils is nestled among the rolling, vineyard covered hills for which the region is famous. Founded in 1814, J. Moreau et Fils is a specialist in unoaked Chablis styles and has nearly two centuries of experience behind it and a very strong vision for the future. Since 2006 the wines have been vinified with the very close involvement of Prof. Denis Dubourdieu with the Moreau winemaking team. The project has given a new impetus to winemaking in Moreau and we are now seeing a revitalization of the Moreau wines styles, characterised by a lively minerality and a perfect balance between terroir, fruit, structure and texture, making the wines accessible in their youth while at the same time possessing a great ageing potential.

After five years of touring, making wine in some of the most respected Pinot Noir and Chardonnay terroirs of the world (Burgundy, Otago, Yarra) Andrew and Emma Nielsen settled in Beaune and Le Grappin was born in 2011. Their vision is to seek out special sites in the over-looked, under-appreciated reaches of Burgundy and vinify tiny parcels of terroir wines. The wines are vibrant, pure and fine with elegance across the board.

Set in beautiful countryside, 15 kms from the famous wine districts of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, Château Méaume shows how tradition and modern technology can combine in the making of a magnificent wine. Alan and Sue Johnson-Hill, the proprietors, work tirelessly to improve the quality each year. The wine is made 80% from Merlot with equal balance of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

The company’s founder, Thomas Barton left his native Ireland in the beginning of the 18th century & emigrated to Bordeaux when he was just 30 years old. A true adventurer, he founded his wine shipping company in 1725. In 1802 Hugh Barton his grandson & successor teamed up with Daniel Guestier, a French trader to create Barton & Guestier, which is today the oldest wine merchant established in Bordeaux. With over three centuries of experience in the wine business, Barton & Guestier is the 1st French brand name known to millions of consumers worldwide.

Clos Puy Arnaud is a biodynamic Bordeaux estate based in Castillon on the right bank of the river. Thierry Valette is a man steeped in Bordeaux history with his family previously owning Chateau Pavie and Troplong Mondot, the iconic St Emilion estates. Like his forebears, Thierry’s aim is to produce terroir wines from the limestone “asteries” of Castillon. As early as 1874, the Puy Arnaud Cru was cited in the Feret wine reference book “Bordeaux et ses Vins” as being classified as a first growth. In the 1898 edition, it is written: “The Cru Puy Arnaud has 15 hectares situated on the rocky surface of Puy Carpin at the border of Sainte Colombe. Planted with noble grape varieties, cultivated with the utmost care, it produces some of the most sought after wines of the county.” At that time, Puy Arnaud was part of the St Emilion region and was so until the first St Emilion Classification in the 1950s.

Founded in 1877 by Alexander Williams and Arthur Humbert, the company is now owned entirely by the Medina family of Jerez. Williams and Humbert was the first producer to convince the ‘regulador’ to allow it to put age designations on some of their finest Sherries, from 12 year old to 30 year old wines.

El Maestro Sierra combines traditional winemaking with artisan character. More than 180 years after its creation, the bodega is still family owned and stands in the same location, where almost two centuries ago, it first opened its doors. Many of the old features are still untouched, from the albero floors where the soleras stand quietly resting, to barrels that contain wines dating back as far as 1860. The labour of “trasiego”, the transition of the wine through the scales of the solera system, is still done by hand with great care and skill.  This handmade ethos, the firm ideal of quality over quantity, and, the patience to allow each of their wines the necessary maturing time have made El Maestro Sierra wines into little works of art; wines of extreme age and complexity.

Beringer Vineyards holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating winery in the Napa Valley. It is also one of the very few wineries that survived the draconian prohibition of 1922, which lasted over a decade. The estate is also in the National Register for Historic Places as a historic district, a status it has held since 2001. With its perfect blend of modern technology and age old traditions, Beringer Vineyards still produces memorable wines that continue to bring recognition to the company and all of Napa Valley.

Chris Brockway makes vivid wines from quirky grape varieties, in organic and biodynamic production, around California. His winemaking journey began at UC Davis, one of the world’s most famous schools of oenology, but his experiences drinking & enjoying minimal intervention & natural wines led him on a different path. The wines at Broc Cellars are made with natural ferments with no additions (except for some SO2 at bottling) and a constant eye on experimentation – the winery is brimming with amphora, concrete eggs and wooden fermenting vats.

Another of the new wave of South African producers, husband and wife team Mick and Jeanine Craven are producing stunning terroir-driven wines from the Stellenbosch Region. Mick (an Australian) and Jeanine (a South African) met during vintage in California in 2007 and have travelled the winemaking world working for the likes of Dujac and Chapoutier and since finally settling in Jeanine’s native Stellenbosch. The Craven philosophy is that hard work in the vineyards makes light work in the cellars. All of the wines come from single vineyards, winemaking is very hands off with minimal additions (if any), with native ferments and neutral oak.

Despite having less than 2000 inhabitants Rust was bestowed the title of city by the Hungarian crown in the 1600’s perhaps down to the fame of the local wines particularly Ausbruch the lusciously sweet wine which was once one of the world’s most expensive wines. Michael Wenzel is finely tuned to the history all around him on the Austro-Hungarian border. He grows Furmint with cuttings taken across the border by his grandfather during Hungarian communism. The wines are zippy and textured with a real purity from minimal intervention winemaking and low sulphur dioxide use just at bottling.

Stephanie and Eduard Tscheppe make authentic wines in a restored 17th century winery in the village of Oggau on the Neusiedlersee lake in Burgenland in Austria. Indigenous varieties farmed biodynamically show the true nature and interest of what Austrian wines can achieve. Stephanie and Eduard felt each of their plots showed a unique personality and wanted to ensure that this was portrayed from vine to glass hence the distinctive caricatured faces on each label. Gut Oggau are Demeter certified biodynamic and a member of Renaissance des Appellations which is a worldwide body for the co-promotion of authentic terroir wines.

Fedellos is a young project between four friends, conceived in 2013. The early vintages already show outstanding potential and they have estalished a real cult following. Fedellos loosely translates as “Brats”, and Couto refers to the 12th century manor in Ribeira Sacra at the heart of the old vineyards on the steep terraces of the rivers Sil and Bibei. The wines are made from local grape varieties like Godello, Mencia and Merenzao fermented with indigenous yeasts and whole bunches, at low temperatures to favour a gentle extraction of colour and phenolics. All the wines share an Atlantic freshness and a slatey minerality that make these wines unmistakably Galician.

Hailing from the north-east of Italy, near Venice in the Veneto region, Teresa Rizzi wines exude cool-climate elegance and approachability. Ideal as house wine options, the range consists of the three most popular styles favoured by Irish consumers today: a lively and fresh Prosecco with a well integrated mousse and delicious peach and pear fruity aromatics, a fruity and fresh Pinot Grigio, and a smooth and rich Merlot.

11 hectares of ancient vines at altitudes of 600-900 metres on the slopes of the Europe’s most infamous volcano – Mount Etna. Michele Faro creates wines of great tension and precision from indigenous varieties Nerello Mascalese & Carricante. For those unfamiliar with the styles, the reds are broody and elegant and will appeal to lovers of Burgundy & the great wines of Northern Italy, Barolo & Barbaresco; the whites are vibrant and textural and while unique in character will appeal to lovers of Chablis & Riesling.

The history of MASI is the history of its vineyards: its name derives from “Vaio dei MASI”, meaning “little valley of the MASI” in the valley of the Negrar (in the Valpolicella classico zone), which was the first vineyard acquired by the Boscaini family, owners of MASI, at the end of the 18th century. MASI produces premium wines which are modern in style but rooted in tradition, using mainly grapes indigenous to the Veneto and utilising age-old techniques such as ‘appassimento’. Sandro Boscaini is the sixth generation of the family running MASI. He is regarded as the de facto authority on winemaking in the Veneto due to his decades of visionary innovation, experimentation and development in the field. This resulted in the first ‘Ripasso’ wine, Campofiorin, as well as adapting similar techniques to create other unique wines like Masianco and the rest of the ‘Super Venetian’ family for which MASI is internationally famous.

The Hugel family are implementing the major principles they inherited from their ancestors and are driven to make Hugel and Alsace wine the great white wine of the 21st century. Hugel wines have become very popular with Irish consumers and wine lovers worldwide. They are the most flexible of wines in terms of food pairings: cheese, fish, lamb, Indian, Asian, fusion and more traditional foods are all enhanced by these wonderful wines. They represent great value for money, particularly Hugel Gentil. Hugel Gentil is the only Hugel wine that is a blend of several varieties and the perfect introduction to Alsace wines. This wine revives an ancient Alsace tradition that wines assembled from noble grape varieties were called ‘Gentil’. Gentil ‘Hugel’ allies the suave, spicy flavour of Gewurztraminer, the body of Pinot Gris, the finesse of Riesling, the grapiness of Muscat and the refreshing character of Sylvaner.

Philippe is famous for being one of the leading lights of the natural wine scene worldwide – a title that doesn’t always sit well with him. His philosophy is certainly one of minimal intervention but his ideas on winemaking, particularly the use of sulphur dioxide, would be anathema to some of the more dogmatic natural winemakers.  Philippe’s wines are characterized by wonderful fruit purity and clean structural lines; wines that clearly speak of the villages where they were born.  His cellars are based in the heart of the Burgundian capital of Beaune where he crafts small parcels from throughout the region.

Brulieres de Beychevelle is owned by Chateau Beychevelle who are based in St Julien. Being further from the Gironde estuary, they benefit from a cooler climate. The vineyard is in the Haut-Médoc appellation and has been managed organically since 2008. Brulières’ blend consists of two grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Vinified and aged in a separate winery, it is produced with the same level of care as Château Beychevelle and Amiral de Beychevelle. “This third wine under the fourth-growth Beycheville label offers value with style. Produced from grapes that are outside the chateau’s Saint-Julien appellation, it shows plenty of the estate’s stylish winemaking. There’s black currants and attractive acidity and tannins.” – Wine Enthusiast. The Grand Bateau range is made by Chateau Beychevelle’s winemaker Philippe Blanc in the classic Bordeaux tradition with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for the red and Sauvignon Blanc for the white.

Since 1889, the Ferrer family have been producing superior quality Cava, the result of years of dedicated exceptional skill and loving care. Cava is the name given to quality sparkling wine, produced from a blend of three Spanish varieties, Macabeo, Paralleda and Xarel-lo. The sparkle and flavour develop in the bottle as it ages in cool, dark underground cellars. Sant Sadurni d’Anoia is the home and heart of Freixenet, situated near Barcelona, this is an area of great beauty with a fabulous climate for wine-making.
